The Great Outsiders primarily guide groups on multiple day expeditions. Our main aim is provide safe, comfortable immersion in the outdoors. A Great Outsiders expedition will often involve wild-camping, sourcing water from mountain streams , cooking outdoors and discovering the hidden beauty of the UK’s most wild and wonderful locations. We not only provide guidance and navigation but we also supply high quality gear so you can enjoy nature in safety and comfort. We are not about conquering mountain tops, or performing feats of endurance, we want you to experience the wonder of the Great Outdoors and immerse yourself in the wilderness.

Stewart Wellings AKA Scooby

Stewart 'Scooby' Wellings has been working in the outdoors for over 3 decades. He has led over 30 trips and expeditions in South America climbing the high Andes from the Atacama desert to Patagonia and the high mountains of Peru, where he met Liliana, his wife of 20 years. They have 2 lovely grown up children. He has spent 6 months in Alaska crossing icefields and trekking. He has trekked, climbed and travelled in India, Nepal and New Zealand, led groups to diverse places such as Wadi Rum in Jordan, the mountains of Norway and Northern Spain and led hundreds of trips like The Three Peaks challenge here in the UK.

James Hickman

James Hickman is a professional, touring folk musician who has always had a passion for the outdoors, he became committed to becoming a mountain leader and leading expeditions on one such tour where are very own “Scooby” was acting as driver and roady. In between gigs the pair headed off into the Scottish mountains where James cut his teeth. He has since become an avid wild-camper, heading off into the UK’s various mountain ranges for solo, wild and wonderful multi-day camps. Now he has his mountain leader qualification under his belt and brings a wealth of equipment and outdoors knowledge to The Great Outsiders.
